“Gale. I can feel the muscles in my face relaxing, my pace quickening as I climb the hills to our place, a rock ledge overlooking a valley. A thicket of berry bushes protects it from unwanted eyes. The sight of him waiting there brings on a smile. Gale says I never smile except in the woods.”
Now, before I start this little rant here, I’m going to say that I have nothing against Peeta. He’s really sweet, really kind and he obviously cares for Katniss in a very special and unmatched way.
But, from a literary stand point, I can throw a rock at one of my bookshelves and chances are that I will probably hit a book who’s main character is just like Peeta. He’s just sooo. stereotypical. Which isn’t necessarily a bad thing, just not MY thing. Peeta is just another one of those boys in books who put everything on his sleeve. And, I find it just strange that books find it necessary to have the main character fall in love with the other main character, and then BAM they’re together for the rest of their lives. Like… That doesn’t even happen in real life. Well, maybe sometimes it does, but more often than not, we go through relationships and break ups. Now, I understand that Katniss was in no position to chose, but before the Quarter Quell, she chose Gale.
Which brings me to the reasons I like Gale. I will admit, first, that he was probably a little too jealous for his own good after the first games. But from Page 1, I knew beyond a shadow of a doubt that Gale loved her. Katniss, whose prospective we’re reading from, is kind of blind to all things that go beyond hunting. I’m the same way, so I understand the feeling. However, Gale is strong and intelligent. I think that the reasons he didn’t act on any of that alone time with Katniss is because Katniss just didn’t have an interest in a future with a mate. And Gale was always thinking about what Katniss wanted, and tried to predict her thoughts. But Gale tells her that they could run away together, all the time, even before we join their lives, Katniss references that the conversation they have about running away is not something new. And, I can see where Katniss has some affection for Gale, more after the Games than before it. But Gale teamed up with this girl who was two years younger than him, who was so shy that he heard Catnip instead of Katniss when they first met. And he still allied with her, and they hunt and spend all their time together. Gale had all this time to act on his feelings true, but if Peeta has feelings for Katniss for all this time too, he could have acted on them as well.
All I’m trying to say is that, neither of the characters are bad, and I’m not trying to persuade or desuade someone from who they like. I’m just giving a standpoint on Why I like Gale, partly as a response to one of my friends posts about why she likes Peeta.
